Secure collaboration tools for education

Secure communications tools are a key component of the information and communication technology (ICT) function within the education sector.

Increasingly, instant messaging, voice calls, video calls, video conferencing and screen sharing are invaluable for teacher-to-student and teacher-to-class communication, as well as group chats and home learning.

Meanwhile voice over IP (VoIP) means all such communication is essentially free for students and staff in an age of unlimited internet.

However, while students use consumer class messenger apps in their personal life, schools and universities have a safeguarding responsibility to ensure online collaboration tools are secure and protect students’ communications and identities. Our intuitive user interface, Riot, is as slick, fast and easy-to-use as any chat app.

Best collaboration tool for education

New Vector provides secure collaboration for schools, including end-to-end encrypted instant messaging.

New Vectors products are based on the Matrix open source project. Matrix is decentralised, letting institutions collaborate securely and directly with one another, rather than each being isolated in their separate silos of communication.

Uniquely, Matrix’s end-to-end encryption allows teachers and students to identify their own devices and verify other users by QR codes and emoji comparison to ensure people within conversations are who they claim to be. Bridging technology can also enable Matrix-based messaging to safely interoperate with proprietary consumer-grade instant messenger services.

As it is a non-proprietary platform, universities and schools can also choose how they deploy their Matrix-based collaboration suite. For maximum control, the data and conversation history can be stored on-premise. Alternatively New Vector can deliver the entire collaboration system on Modular, our scalable software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform. Custom configuration is available if required, as well as integration with existing authentication systems and enterprise antivirus functionality. Deployments can also be hosted in third party private or public cloud environments.

The freedom to choose between hosting options gives schools and universities full operational independence. Data portability ensures no vendor lock-in and provides instant agility should cloud or in-house hosting be unavailable unexpectedly; simply switch servers at a moment’s notice.

Technology and collaboration in the classroom

New Vector works with a wide range of schools, universities and EdTech providers across the globe. In the Netherlands New Vector works with SURF, a cooperative association of Dutch educational and research institutions, to provide universities throughout the Netherlands with secure messaging. Students authenticate via their existing ID system, forming a national network of secure collaboration.
